Aurora works as a backend developer at the Norwegian Police. She started out as a statistician, became a data scientist, and eventually fell in love with backend development.

Starting her career at NAV IT gave her a strong foundation to build on and the courage to explore new adventures in software development at the Norwegian Police.

When she’s not coding, she enjoys spreading sunshine and laughter around the office—often with a good cup of hand-brewed coffee to go along.

In this talk, I share a hands-on, opinionated journey from Kotlin’s concise, modern syntax back to Java’s more explicit (and sometimes verbose) world. Rumor has it that this can be a painful transition—but is Java still what it used to be, or have the changes over the past five years turned the developer experience into something far more enjoyable?

We’ll look at real-world code examples, explore differences in language philosophies, and cover practical dos and don’ts for developers making the same transition. You will get insight into my experience making this shift in a large-scale project at the Norwegian Police.
