How Are We Doing? Practical Metrics that Matter

Room 3

Engelsk 45 min High performing developer teams

Markus Krüger

Markus Krüger is a developer at Stø AS, the company building and running services like BankID and BankAxept. He has worked as a developer, architect, and tech lead for over 20 years. He has held several presentations at JavaZone and other venues previously, on various subjects such as performance testing, scheduling, scaling systems, cloud architectures, and observability. He likes making large things go fast.

Is your development team working well? How do you know? Teams can easily fall prey to groupthink and convince themselves they are doing great and are high performers. In reality, they're trailing behind without realising they need to up their game. The DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) have provided a possible antidote, the DORA metrics, that have become an industry standard and can give good insights on how you're doing compared to other developers.

This presentation will give an introduction to the DORA metrics and what they measure. I will then tell about the experiences Stø, the company behind services like BankID and BankAxept, have had so far implementing the metrics in a lightweight way to improve the way we work. You will also hear about other measurements you might consider to get the full picture, and how to avoid metrics gaming. Don't run afoul of Goodheart's law: when a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure.

Developers, architects, and team leads who want to know if they're high performing compared to their peers, and what to do if not.
