Rust will slash your backend costs

Room 6

Engelsk 20 min backend rust cost-management performances

Jean Tuffier

Hi! I'm the team lead for the "Onboard" team at Entur. We deliver an app used by thousands employees of public transport companies in Norway. I have more than 10 years of professional experience with Android development. I also have some iOS, web and Rust projects on the side. You can reach me at https://mastodon.social/@tufekoi

On October 1st 2025, Open AI announces buying 900 000 wafers DRAM, about 40% of the global market production. As a direct consequence, some DDR5 kits that cost about 300€ in 2023, exceeded 1.000€ by the beginning of 2026. The SSD market was also impacted with price"only" doubling so far. How long will it take "non-AI" data centers to run out of stock and start raising their prices to compensate for future hardware investment?

On the developer side, we have a plethora of backend frameworks based on the V8 JS engine, the JVM and similar technologies. They all have one thing in common: CPU and memory consumption. But most cloud providers charge by how much you use those resources. We can clearly guess the direction of our cloud service invoices: it will go up!

What if we had a language slashing your costs by 90%? Enters Rust, the most-admired programming language in 2025.

Join me in this lightning talk to discover the world of backend services written with Rust. We'll start from scratch, by going through the tools we need to get started, the different backend framework available and how we can deploy our first backend API.

Everyone can attend this session since I'll start from scratch/beginner level, but it will be extra interesting backend developers. The participants will gain a short and pain-free introduction to Rust and how it can be easily used for side projects.
