Ken Sipe

Ken is a distributed application engineer and architect. Ken has worked with Fortune 500 companies to small startups in the roles of developer, designer, application architect and enterprise architect. Ken's current focus is on containers, container orchestration, high scale micro-service design and AI integration using MCP.

Reliability is not an accident — it's math. This session builds a clear, working understanding of SLIs, SLOs, and SLAs from first principles, starting with availability math: what the nines actually mean, how multi-service architectures compound failure, and what it realistically takes to move from two nines to four. We define exactly what to measure and why — the difference between infrastructure signals and user-experience signals, and how to derive SLIs that reflect real outcomes rather than server health. The centrepiece is the error budget: what it is, how it's calculated, and how it changes the way teams make decisions. Error budgets turn reliability from a feelings argument into a shared engineering constraint that drives development velocity, architecture choices, and operational maturity at the same time. We close with the SRE maturity arc — the practices, not the tools, that separate reactive firefighting from proactive reliability engineering. You'll leave with a mental model your whole team can use, from developer to architect to ops lead.
