The defining feature of the human species is our ability to create ever better tools. Our tools are our superpower.
I'm often negative about new tools. But I believe that's a positive thing.
Because our tools, their creation and use are often deeply problematic.
In software we are not only guilty of increasing energy consumption and destroying natural habitats to fit in ever more data centres. But we also write addictive algorithms and energy hungry slop machines that encourage mental laziness. Are we really making the world better?
I believe we need a minimalist movement. We need to declutter. We need to get back to our roots where we took pride in how little code was needed to solve a task. Not how little code we write, or how small our units are, but how little code the computer has to execute.
Less code with fewer dependencies means
increased performance,
improved security,
easier debugging,
and it’s also a fun challenge.
Let me give you some examples, and I hope you leave inspired to try more minimalist approaches in all software you write, both at work and for fun.
