Kotlin Coroutines in Ktor: What you need to know

JetBrains' Ktor is built from the ground up on Kotlin Coroutines. Yet Coroutines remain one of the more challenging concepts for many Kotlin developers - myself included. For the last 3 years I have been working as a backend developer on a project where we used Ktor. I have picked up both good habits and hard lessons along the way.

This talk focuses on how Coroutines work in Ktor, and how you can leverage Coroutines effectively in your own projects. While it is possible to use Ktor without thinking much about Coroutines, a solid understanding can help you write safer, more resource efficient, and more maintainable code.

We will cover the key benefits of Kotlin Coroutines, how Ktor uses them internally, and practical patterns for real-world scenarios — including structured concurrency, running tasks in parallel and managing background tasks.
