No More Magic: Mastering the Explicit Kotlin Stack with Ktor, Exposed and Koin

Geoffrey Rekier

Geoffrey is a seasoned software engineer with over 15 years of experience across a diverse range of projects. He has worked as a developer, architect, and team lead, contributing to both startups and large enterprises. With a strong background in JVM technologies and full-stack development, Geoffrey has built everything from small-scale applications to mission-critical core systems. Passionate about modern development practices, he enjoys sharing his experiences.

For over a decade, Spring Boot has been the JVM’s undisputed king, promising high-speed delivery through its powerful "magic." But for many developers, that magic eventually becomes a black box. We’ve all been there: a @Transactional that won't roll back, a Bean conflict that takes hours to resolve, or a stack trace that disappears into 50 layers of proxy logic. As applications grow, the implicit "magic" that once helped us becomes a wall—one that’s nearly impossible to climb because we didn't build it.

In this session, we explore a powerful, 100% Kotlin-native alternative: The JetBrains Stack. We will live-build an API using Ktor for asynchronous routing, Exposed for type-safe persistence, and Koin for pragmatic dependency injection, shifting the philosophy from "Convention over Configuration" to "Explicit over Implicit."

What you will learn:
- Explicit over Implicit: Why DSL-based configuration beats annotation scanning for long-term maintainability.
- The Coroutine Advantage: How Ktor leverages Kotlin Coroutines to handle high concurrency with minimal resources.
- Type-Safe Persistence: Using Exposed to write SQL that looks like Kotlin and fails at compile-time, not runtime.
- Lightweight DI: How Koin provides the benefits of Dependency Injection without the reflection and proxy overhead of Spring.

Leave the "black box" behind and discover how to build backends where you—the developer—are actually in control.

Primary for Backend Developers and Architects familiar with the JVM (Java/Kotlin). Secondary for Team leads looking to reduce onboarding complexity and "framework magic" in their microservices. We will assume basic knowledge of Spring/DI concepts.
