The Magic of OpenTelemetry: Rewriting Your App in Production
– Room 4
Foredragsholder
Om sesjonen
OpenTelemetry makes traces, metrics, and logs appear as if by magic but what actually happens behind the JVM agent we routinely add to our applications?
This talk goes where most developers never look. You’ll see how the OpenTelemetry agent sneaks into your JVM, intercepts class loading, and rewrites your application on the fly. We’ll explore the power of the javaagent mechanism, the Instrumentation API, and the internals of ByteBuddy that allow instrumenting Spring, Servlets, JDBC, or gRPC without changing a single line of your code. Your application is running, but not quite the way you think it is.
You’ll leave with a clear understanding of the real impact these changes can have in production: latency, allocations, potential conflicts, and behavior modified at runtime, along with practical techniques to diagnose what is really happening under the hood.
If you’re using OpenTelemetry without really knowing what it’s doing inside your JVM, or if you want to finally understand how an agent can rewrite your application in production, then welcome: this session opens the black box… and reveals the magic.
Passer for
Developers using OpenTelemetry or any observability JVM agent. Engineers curious about the bytecode injection and its capabilities in general. No prior experience required.
